Frye
Island is a private community of 375 homes, open May through
October. It lies ¼ mile off Raymond Cape in the center of Big Sebago,
Maine's second-largest lake. The atmosphere is casual and low-key. Frye
Island is about 2.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, and is accessed via a
5 minute ferry ride on the "Leisure Ladies" I and II (65'
single-deck car ferries
owned and operated by the property owners' association).
Access is limited to owners, renters, their guests, and golfers. |

At the
south end of the Island, 1200' Long Beach offers excellent waterskiing
opportunities. Frye Island's new marina, behind Long Beach, was recently
completed, and finger slips are available for rent. Gasoline and boat
rentals are available at marinas in Raymond, Windham and So.
Casco.
All association beaches are available to everyone staying on Frye
Island. Mostly sandy, they vary in size from intimate to expansive.
West-side beaches offer the magnificent view across Lake Sebago to the
distant mountains, including Mount Washington, and sunsets. East-side
beaches have a more protected shore, face Raymond Cape and the sunrise,
and enjoy sunshine until 1-2 pm. You can wander freely all over the
Island, picking berries in season. You may see deer, rabbits, and a
variety of birds - and a few raccoons! The roads are unpaved, and the
speed limit is 20 mph.
Social activities vary year to year, and include swimming lessons,
aerobics, clambakes and games nights. For details check the Island
newspaper, FINS,
is published every Friday and available at the mainland ferry landing
and the office. Non-denominational services are held on Sundays.
Off-Island activities include bowling, parasailing, paddleboat trips,
miniature golf, antiquing, and a variety of restaurants in nearby
Raymond, Naples and North Windham. Outlet shops abound in Freeport and
North Conway, each a little over an hour's drive away.
The Frye Island water supply is from Sebago Lake, chlorinated and tested
regularly. Emergency
services are by Raymond Rescue and the Cumberland County Sheriff's
Department; ferry crews are on call 24 hours a day. The association
office is upstairs of the General Store; hours are posted. At the house,
a guide is available, which includes all phone numbers and schedules for
Island services. |
